Kindergarten: Pinch Pots

I have intentionally delayed posting this, since some of our kindergarten friends were happily chatting about how they were going to give them as Christmas gifts. If any of you parents did receive them under the tree, I hope you enjoyed them as much as our youngster enjoyed making them.
For the first time, I tried having my kindergartners glaze their work. They seemed very happy with their "glass" looking pots!

1st Grade: Dragon Construction

This is an exciting time to be in first grade! We have begun our construction of some more Chinese New Year dragons. This time we are celebrating the Year of the Rooster on Jan. 28th. It was so much fun to see how excited this year's first graders were to start this collaborative project, after seeing last year's parade.

Kindergarten: Exploration Stations

When time allows, I love offering my little friends the opportunity to simply experiment with new techniques or materials. I like to call these my "Exploration Stations". I try to have drawing, painting, printing, modeling, cutting and construction options, if possible.

2nd Grade: Analogous Colors

Second grade has spent the last 3-4 class periods dealing with analogous color sets. We like to refer to these as either families or neighbors on the color wheel. Their job was to paint an abstract background with an analogous color set. It was a lot of fun to see the variety of styles these backgrounds took on!

Today we talked about neutral colors and how they are not part of analogous color sets. We spent time discussing how to create contrast between our very busy, colorful backgrounds and simple foregrounds with a single neutral color.

3rd Grade: Portraits

Third grade spent a day talking about how the human face is proportioned. After drawing out some portraits according to these proportions, our friends are making their portraits into multi-medium characters. What fun watching all the different personalities come out!

Kindergarten: Plate of Apples

Here our kindergarteners are finishing up their placemats by making some fringe on the edge.

Finally, we use circle sponges to print our apples! A finger full of green paint makes a perfect stem and leaf.

1st Grade: Color Colors

Our first grade friends did some exploratory work with oil pastels, colored pencils, markers and crayons layered with cool colored watercolors over the top. We had so much fun experimenting, while trying to make the separation between warm and cool colors. We they finished, they had the option to use it as a background to their warm colored Indian corn or simply use it as they chose.
